How to Remove Bugs from the Front Bumper of a Car in Meridian, Idaho

Hey guys, Brian with Limelight Detailing here in Meridian, Idaho. I want to show you how we get bugs off the front of a car. Today we’re working on a beautiful Chevy Camaro which has returned from a road trip. It’s got a ton of bugs splatter on the front. Pretty common with any car that’s been driven across the country or on a road trip. There’s a lot of different methods, theories, ways that guys take bugs off the front of cars. This is the way that we like to do it at Limelight Detailing

Step 1: How Limelight Detailing Removes Bugs from Cars

What we’ve done is pressure washed the whole car. It loosens up the:

  • Bugs
  • Dirt
  • Debris

that’s not going to come off with a little elbow grease. What you have is a wet surface on the front of the car. What you want to make sure that you do, number one, when you’re trying to get bugs off the front of a car is to make sure you don’t use too much pressure with your pressure washer. Don’t try to cheat the system and spray it too hard. What can happen is some of the nasty bugs have a really hard shell on them and they can chip the paint off, sometimes pretty badly.

What Type of Clay Bar Should I Use to Remove Bugs from Car Bumpers?

In the second step, you want to apply a clay bar application. So you will pressure wash and then do this method as the second step. What I’m using is a waterless wash that also doubles as a clay lubricant. This is a 2.0 Speed Clay Bar. What I love about this is you can really apply pressure and it is safe for all clear coats as well as gel coats. The clay bar lubricant is:

  • Shaped like a mouse pad for your computer.
  • Hard rubber on the red portion.
  • Foam on the other side for pressure. And on the
  • The bottom is the actual clay alternative.

Some guys like to use traditional clay, which is more like a bar of soap type, more of a putty. You can see that in some of my other videos. But specifically for getting bugs off the front, I like to use this because I can really put pressure on it and scrub without scraping or scratching any of the paint, so it’s really effective for getting bugs off cars.

Step 2: Apply Clay Bar Lubricant Application

I’m going to use this clay bar lubricant and dab the surface. Whenever you’re trying to get bugs off the front, wetter is better, as much as you can. So then you’re just going to simply use some elbow grease here. These are some pretty nasty bugs. I don’t know where these things came from, Texas I think, but it’s pretty bad. Sometimes your clay bar is going to get some of this nasty buildup, which we can:

  • Wipe off the bar.
  • Scrub off with our soap.
  • Polish it off.

But you just work it and keep adding moisture by spraying the surface.

This is breaking up quite a bit of it. It’s pretty gross.

Step 3: Wipe the Exterior Surface Clean

Then I have a clean microfiber towel. This is going to get rid of the majority of the black residue. Once again, just keep spraying it like wetter is better. This is the part of the detailing that is the nitty-gritty. The down and dirty detailing. This is the very non-glamorous part but it really makes a difference when you’re trying to get a car clean.

I’m going to leave this section here so you can see it clean.

Step 4: Polish the Paint Surface

We’ll wipe the rest of this off. Like I said, lots of elbow grease, takes some effort. We’re going to have to go through and polish some of the residues off either with a polish or with a buffing compound. Anyway, what we’re left with. Some of these are going to be kind of hard to tell in the video, but some of this is just paint chips. This is just hard plastic, so you’re going to get some of it that’s chipped. But for the most part, all your bugs are going to come off. Sometimes you’ll have to wash your car twice depending on the severity of the bugs.
